Title: Thick Translation in C. Allen’s English Translation of Shijing

Abstract: Thick translation is an effective approach to disseminate Chinese culture and translate Chinese classics. However, the thickness in Clement Allen’s translation of Shijing has been neglected by Chinese academia. His translation is produced on the basis of previous works and by various means of thick translation such as using various subtexts like titles, prefaces, and notes. He presents his thick translated work from different perspectives including translation, poetics, culture, history, and so on. His practice of thick translation could shed some light on the translation of Chinese classics, such as positioning target readers, using intertextual resources, doing research before translation, and endowing the translation with a proper thickness.
