Title: An Overview of Studies on Kazuo Ishiguro’s Fiction
Abstract: There has been remarkable growth in studies on Kazuo Ishiguro during the last three decades. His fiction is gaining more and more academic attention especially after he won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2017. Studies at home and abroad focus more on his narrative style and narrative dynamics, Japanese-British cultural identity, and the themes of memory and history in his fiction. Scholars abroad pay more attention to the artistic inheritances and challenges of tradition in his fiction, while scholars at home tend to emphasize the themes of identity and ethics in his fiction. But there is still a great lack of comprehensive studies of Ishiguro’s oeuvre to date, notably studies on his works beyond fiction, and studies that relate his fiction to his upbringing and background. At the historical turning point when Ishiguro won the Nobel Prize for Literature, it is necessary to have an overview of studies on his fiction at home and abroad in order to offer academic references and inspiration for further studies on Ishiguro in the future.
