Title: A Comparative Study of Chinese Translations of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in the Chinese-Speaking Regions
Abstract: This paper discusses the characteristics of Chinese translations of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, an English classic for children, published in the Chinese-speaking regions, i.e. mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Malaysia and Singapore. It finds that different political and historical situations and literary contexts have shaped the early circulated Chinese texts and the very first translation of Alice produced in each place. Translations of Alice have also shown regional features regarding the number of translations, the form of translated texts and the features of translators. Moreover, it is a shared trend in different places to translate Alice in a popular style aiming at a child audience. Drawing on each other's strengths may further improve the translation of children’s literature.
