Title: On Thick Translation in Stephen H. West and Wilt L. Idema’s The Story of the Western Wing
Abstract: On the basis of the earliest and most complete version, Stephen H. West and Wilt L. Idema’s The Story of the Western Wing comprehensively employs multiple forms of thick translation and facilitates the spread and acceptance of Xixiang Ji in the English world. The paper examines the inside and outside translation, and finds that thick translation in the form of parenthesis, footnote, illustration, and introduction and so on restores the meaning and style of Wang Shifu’s original work to the utmost extent. In the context of globalization, further development and comprehensive application of thick translation will help promote the overseas dissemination of Chinese literature and culture.
